DePalma’s strengths: marrying the image with the soundtrack, using the camera as an active participant in the chase, using familiar every day places and situations juxtaposed with traditional cinematic moments to create a thrilling build up to a tense climax, understanding the importance of when to show the completion of movement by the human body with long shots and takes and when to use editing to cut away. Weaknesses: seriously, Viggo Mortensen & Al Pacino as Puerto Ricans, pacing of the story was too deliberate, i.e. slow at moments, didn’t initially buy into Carlito’s genuine claim that he wanted to change because of the setting of the first scene of Carlito’s Way.
