I really loved the first episode of Constantine, but the rest of the first season did nothing for me. Each episode can be surmised in the following manner: weird thing to be investigated, angel visit, investigation, Constantine is forced to deal with someone who doesn’t like him then begrudgingly admits at the end of the show that Constantine isn’t a complete bastard and is actually doing his best, side characters do something that isn’t too pivotal or interesting, evil vanquished after Constantine does a few things that he shouldn’t do while saying quips AND SCENE. Matt Ryan is spot on and perfect. I’m happy to see Harold Perrineau. Chas was actually more interesting when he took center stage, but is under utilized. Zed did less for me in 12 episodes than Liv did in the pilot episode, and neither actress is at fault or better than the other-I don’t care about Zed’s powers, her father, her random love interests or her impersonation of Ariadne. I also don’t care about the growing darkness, which is a serious problem because that is supposed to be the overarching story, and I usually love the promise of a good apocalypse. There were some notable guest appearances by Jeremy Davies and William Mapother. I like to see hot black men, but Papa Midnite could never come back, and I wouldn’t care. His storyline makes me want to watch sports: I’m more powerful than you, look at me be imposing and powerful, I am defeated by Constantine, who is better than I thought even though I’ve tangled with him repeatedly and am apparently as dumb as a doormat not to remember. Ultimately the chemistry between the characters is uneven, and the stories failed more often than not. Is there a trope that if there is an angel, that angel must become human and have sex? If that doesn’t happen, does a kitten die? Is that why we have to keep seeing that unrevolutionary storyline? Been there, done that-the Nephilim called & they want their story back. Perhaps if I was a fan of the comic, I would have liked the show more, but if it got cancelled tomorrow, I would not care a bit.
