I am personally very conservative so I cannot give an unqualified seal of approval to TWiB! AFTERDARK, but I do listen to it regularly. Pros: TWiB! AFTERDARK takes a positive and affirming approach as opposed to a shaming approach to sex, i.e. “sex positive,” and body image, educates about the differences between consensual sex and rape/admiration versus harassment, shines a light on those who seek to create impossible standards for people, gives voice to the underrepresented segments of our community, emphasizes that feminism is equally for men and women and that feminists love men. TWiB! AFTERDARK always starts light, but ends up being extremely serious, deep, insightful and touching. Cons: sex toy of the week, frank exchange about sexual situations and generally racy moments. The pros cannot be separated from the cons because they are related to the hosts’ willingness to be frank and vulnerable to their audience. Until others who may be more conservative sexually are willing to be just as frank and progressive about their journey and affirming about these issues in a podcast, TWiB! AFTERDARK is a much needed antidote to the exploitive, sexist and objectifying options currently available. The hosts, Feminista Jones, an Ebony magazine writer and social worker, and N’jaila Rhee, who is also a host at We Nerd Hard and an exotic dancer, may use similar bravado about their exploits, but they are also vigorous advocates for the right to be respected as human beings and express the pain and tribulations they have encountered in life. I am grateful that they are willing to provide audience members like myself a chance to be exposed to their experience absent the judgment and assumptions that I may bring if a third party was describing them to me. I hope that it will help me be a better and more supportive person to others.
