Where to Watch

An American remake directed by the same man who made the Dutch original yet somehow still misses the mark though it had occasional sparks of potential such as asking: what would have happened if the new girlfriend decided to stick around. In the end, The Vanishing (1993) fails. Jeff Bridges gets a lot correct and emphasizes the sinister dynamic between the father and daughter, but the affected accent is so distractingly awful & in the end, he becomes a cartoon bad guy unaffected by pain instead of a chilling, calculating & impersonal menace of the original. Kiefer Sutherland is all wrong-unable to do haunted. Nancy Travis kind of steals the show, but this version plays so much in the physical rather than the psychological realm that all potential for subverting the narrative & a clever play on gender dynamics (think final girl) largely falls flat. See the original.
