For me, what makes Tying the Knot a strong documentary is how it juxtaposes how people in similar circumstances in other countries live so differently & well in comparison to people in the US who end up suffering under DOMA. To be a gay couple in US means assuming your deceased partner’s debt while your assets are taken from you by your significant other’s relatives who may never have visited or cared for your partner.
