I’ve never been a James Caan fan. He always seemed a bit one note and because that one note doesn’t really appeal to me, I overlooked him though I enjoyed him in Funny Lady. I’ve always loved Michael Mann until he discovered digital and forsook film. His sense of color and framing paired with music is unparalleled though some find it dated. Thief is more about emotion than action and only comes second to Manhunter in Mann’s pantheon of hits. A pleasant surprise.
