Where to Watch

I love Kevin Smith, the person, so much that I keep thinking that I am going to like his movies, and I don’t. I want to, but just incredibly uneven. Red State is plagued by the 90 minute curse-feels longer than it is. It wants to be horror a la Saw (which I’ve never seen so the comparison may be lacking), a liberal screed against intolerance-religious or bureaucratic, a Quentin Tarantino talky, etc., but instead of a pastiche of genres like Joss Whedon, it is just different parts that barely hold together. The strongest part is the last 17 to 20 minutes & based on what Kevin Smith originally planned to do versus what he did, it sounds like the real movie needed to start there as opposed to ending there. A lot of wasted potential. Like a drama SNL that permits the skits to last too uncomfortably long. Note to moviemakers: John Goodman needs to star in more movies.
