Mr. Death: The Rise and Fall of Fred A. Leuchter, Jr. is another characteristic Errol Morris film-a quirky approach to a decidedly not quirky subject. This self professed, self taught “expert” on execution decided to consult himself & the limits of science’s ability to examine a historical event. His sin: arrogance. He was in denial that he was wrong despite admitting that he knows nothing about history or investigative techniques. Many of Leuchter’s questions were asked, tried & eliminated by the Nazis (as admitted in their own words) when they tried to determine the most effective way to kill human beings. When he says that it doesn’t make sense why the Nazis killed a slave labor force, I wanted to scream at the tv: “That’s why they’re evil!” In the end, his lack of imagination when it comes to the ability of human beings to rationalize evil is what ruined his life. As a side note, I am always amazed how Holocaust deniers immediately call it a Jewish conspiracy and disregard all the German and American eyewitness accounts of the horror.
