Where to Watch

My original review of Kick-Ass evaporated with the Netflix interface with Facebook which automatically posted your ratings and reviews. If I recall correctly, I enjoyed the post-modern examination of what a comic book word would look like with real world consequences and normal people without superpowers as the protagonists and antagonists. Even though I generally love women kicking ass, I was extremely uncomfortable watching a prepubescent child put in danger even if she was good at it and loved it. I had the same response while watching the first of the atrocious Star Wars prequels with a young Darth Vader. I had less of a problem watching Kick-Ass 2, especially since parts of the movie felt like the struggles faced by Chloë Grace Moretz. Hollywood is trying to put her in the same sexualized pretty teen girl roles whereas in Europe, she would not be stuck in the teen movie ghetto, but offered as emotionally complex roles as her counterpart Saorise Ronan. I have no idea if either film is faithful to the original comic. It won’t change lives, but if you don’t mind that Kick-Ass 2 is extremely violent and the concept sounds interesting, then give it a shot.
