I am a sucker for apocalyptic comedies, and It’s a Disaster is one of the best ones that I have ever seen. Four couples attend a monthly brunch then disaster strikes. Mimosas, anyone? The man-made apocalypse right outside their door only amplifies the social disaster of these brunches and the ordinariness of these people. Even with a chemist and a physician in the house, these people can barely have brunch, forget surviving.
It’s a Disaster’s funniest moments are in the seemingly throwaway dialogue and actors’ glances at each other. You’ll really need to give It’s a Disaster your complete and undivided attention to really enjoy it so turn off your cell phone! I loved when the scene would shift to the outside establishing shot, and the outside would get increasingly more hellish (and yes, the crows end up on the ground too). When David Cross is the straight man for the majority of It’s a Disaster, you know that you’re going to have a great time. There is a great, long-running joke that just when things are going to climax, there will be an interruption or a deflection. My favorite scene is when Julia Styles’ character finally calls a couple out for their behavior
