I like David Fincher, and sometimes I even love him. Michael Douglas is the only person in the world who can successfully play the main character in The Game: Falling Down meets Wall Street with a dash of A Christmas Carol’s spirit. I enjoy The Game as a movie, but the premise kind of ticked me off. How to make the wealthy Nicholas Van Orton a better human being? SPOILERS
Force him to hit rock bottom by taking away all his money, his identity and his life. So he should just be a regular human being who doesn’t have the benefit of the world revolving around him. Then give him everything back. He is not only delighted. He is grateful for the experience as he laughs over the bill. Ha ha ha. His style has changed, and he is actually interacting with people as opposed to having lackeys do it so he is fine now. He won’t be like his father. I’ll be over here folding my arms and giving side eye on behalf of every person who doesn’t need that experience not to be a cold, distant jerk walking in his doomed antecedent’s footsteps. I know, “But the experience was psychologically tailor made to change him.” Whatever. Nothing has really changed. He still feels entitled, and the world still revolves around him, but he is just nicer about it because he is glad that he didn’t murder his brother and die. Bah, humbug.
