Where to Watch

I’ve never seen the original so I can’t really compare the two & can only judge the movie on its own merits. First, Alfie (2004) is really stylish & the filmmaker actually films Jude Law properly–he looks good. Second, you’re watching a movie about a shallow guy who jumps from woman to woman, only cares about clothes & decor & can’t handle anything more substantial than the surface of relationships so if you can’t stomach it, don’t watch it. With that said, the movie wants to have it both ways: totally caters to the surface while leaving the moralism for the end. Why didn’t I have a problem with this? The acting worked, especially the brief male friendship between Alfie and a stranger. I had a lot of problems with the movie, but I didn’t go in expecting Shakespeare so I’ll save my ire about gender & racial representations in the media for another film.”
