I like Bogart & LOVE Hepburn, but I was unable to suspend disbelief from beginning to end because I was so focused on the two leads. Bogart as a Canadian & a subject of the British crown-not in anyone’s wildest dreams. There were only moments of chemistry, but I largely couldn’t buy it. A serious drunk doesn’t have alcohol & instead of suffering from withdrawal, he turns awesome. Despite being filmed on location, I swear that I felt a blue screen at numerous moments. Are we sure? Normally I am a sucker for old Hollywood, but The African Queen let me down. If yesterday my bourgie was showing, I think today my 21st century post modern view of history & movie telling is showing. Too absurd & no genuine emotion despite a ton of effort. Don’t hurl stones & feel free to explain to me why it is awesome because I just don’t see it.
