I live under a rock, i.e. I have no cable, so I’ve heard a lot about Chappelle’s Show, but didn’t see it until recently. As I watched the first season, I thought that it was funny, but preferred Key & Peele because I’m a bit bougie and a lot nerdy and I considered Chappelle crass in comparison. By the second season, I was completely sold because of the reenactments of and interviews related to Charlie Murphy’s surreal celebrity experiences with Prince and Rick James. Chappelle’s Show is at its strongest when it addresses black celebrity culture. Whenever Paul Mooney appeared, Chappelle’s Show grounded its humor in gravitas and trenchant social commentary. I want the Robot Dancing Man everywhere everyday. I can’t stand John Mayer, and I even found his appearance tolerable. My favorite guest appearances were Mos Def, Arsenio Hall and Wayne Brady. I think that Dave Chappelle made the right choice to abruptly end it-always leave them wanting more though I am curious who would take Keanu Reeves in a Racial Draft. (ME!!!)
