Where to Watch

The story of 47 Ronin is actually based on a historical event that occurred in 18th century Japan. Keanu Reeves’ 47 Ronin is less historically accurate than Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter, and I know very little about Japanese history. It mixes vibrant colors, action and fantasy-think monsters from Lord of the Rings’ Mordor. The majority of the cast is Japanese so it would make more sense if the movie’s dialogue was in Japanese, but it is in English. I was disappointed that if the movie’s creators decided to take a ridiculous route, they didn’t let Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa say, “Mortal Kombat!” Keanu’s character isn’t even in the original story so he was clearly created to make a Japanese story more approachable to an American audience. BUT I love Keanu Reeves. I think that he is beautiful so I don’t care about any of that. I kept thinking, “Keanu.” Also I am willing to admit that I’ve gone off on an insane theory, but

perhaps 47 Ronin is inadvertently poignant and personal. Keanu isn’t part Japanese, but he is well known as multiracial and experiencing a ton of personal tragedy in his family and romantic life. He chose to be in 47 Ronin so perhaps this character resonated more with him on a personal level than any previous role. He is ridiculed as a half-breed by white and Japanese people, rejects those that accept him, allies himself with those who don’t then once accepted, his reward is death and not getting the woman that he loves. Perhaps for the first time in his career, by taking this role, he is facing the overwhelming negative aspects of his life that he may have experienced. I just want to give him a hug. I still love you, Keanu!!! 47 Ronin is a must see for Keanu fans.
