I hate Tobey Macguire’s face, but apparently I love Kristen Wiig more so I watched all six episodes of The Spoils of Babylon, a comedy miniseries, in one sitting, which is the length of a feature-length film. The miniseries is a spoof of the 1970s through 1980s epic sweeping TV miniseries usually starring Richard Chamberlain and adapted from thick popular books that use historical events as the backdrop to its characters’ melodramatic lives. Each episode begins and ends with Will Farrell doing a saucy homage to Orson Welles as he expounds on the behind the scenes shenanigans when the miniseries was being filmed.
The Spoils of Babylon is funny and absurd. You will have to give it your complete attention since most of the gags are visual so no multitasking. You may want to skip it if you are unfamiliar with the TV miniseries drama that it is spoofing. If you are a fan of the spoof genre or the cast, definitely give it a shot. I found it amusing enough and still adore Wigg so I placed The Spoils Before Dying in my queue, though I have yet to watch it and am in no rush to do so.
