I love the tv series so I decided to watch the original. Parenthood had some amazing moments, but suffers from Steve Martin doing his Steve Martin mugging, which completely halts the progress of the movie, & using dramatic hysterics to emphasize when a negative turn is coming. Strongest & most believable section was of course, the section with the best actors: Dianne Wiest, Martha Plimpton, a young Joaquin Phoenix and *gasp* Keanu Reeves. In contrast, the show has a more subtle story telling style because it has the luxury of many episodes to develop the characters and an overall better ensemble cast where no individual actor sucks the air out of the room. A bit dated because the idea of someone quitting their job because didn’t get a promotion is rarer today.
