Where to Watch

I started watching Modern Family in 2010, and I really loved it. It had the fake documentary format popularized by The Office with an Altmanesque way of connecting the plot lines until the ultimate reveal: that such a disparate group of people is a family. Unfortunately as Modern Family progressed, it feels more like a commercial for Apple products and other consumer products with some cheap jokes at the characters’ ethnicity or sexual orientation. It still has funny moments: this season, Message Received actually made me laugh uncontrollably when Jay, Gloria and Manny had a standoff to make each of them do something they never wanted to do and the consequences of that standoff. I will still watch the show, but the jokes aren’t breaking any new ground.
