I love zombie movies and the found footage genre, but The Zombie Diaries was a disappointment. There wasn’t enough character development for me to distinguish who each person was and to become invested in the fate of these people as individuals. Found footage is supposed to have shaky cameras as an excuse for lower production values so independent filmmakers can compete in the marketplace, but the scenes were so poorly shot that as The Zombie Diaries progressed, and as each character faced danger while I watched their feet and just heard expletives from characters, I gave up trying to figure out what was going on. The narrative was pretty ambitious even if the actual dialogue was not. Zombies were just a veneer for a deeper mystery, and there may have been script and visual hints of this deeper mystery, but I missed them because I did not know who someone was or what was happening until it became obvious, and The Zombie Diaries was almost finished. I considered giving The Zombie Diaries a second chance and rewatching it, especially since it is only 85 minutes long, but honestly life is too short. Skip it just watch The Walking Dead which already succeeds at examining humanity at its best and basest during times of crisis.
