I’ve always loved Kathryn Bigelow’s movies since Near Dark, but most people know her as the director of The Hurt Locker. Her expertise is immersing us in an unfamiliar world and forcing the audience to look at the hidden and ugly parts of life, particularly violence, unflinchingly and not stylistically while somehow remaining optimistic that something transcendent, beautiful and redemptive can be done if one person commits to changing the world in some way. If Argo was a solid movie, Zero Dark Thirty makes Argo seem like an After School Special. It is a must see movie that forces an audience to ask “Is it worth it? What would you do?” I was surprised that I had such an emotional reaction to the film. Please note that Bigelow does not use the iconic 9-11 footage, but still trigger warning for anyone sensitive to terrorist attack footage–not being facetious.
