Where to Watch

I love Kevin Smith as a human being, but his movies no longer do it for me, and unfortunately, Zack and Miri Make a Porno is not the exception to the rule. Zack and Miri Make a Porno’s heart is old fashioned, while it’s veneer is crude and irreverent. It wants to be Bad Santa meets Judd Apatow, which is weird because without Kevin Smith, neither would have existed, but Zack and Miri Make a Porno just isn’t. Honestly the porn part was the most boring part of the movie. I’m sure that some people thought it was hilarious, but unless it was serving the central plot, that Zack and Miri belong together, particularly one moment of awakening between the central characters that actually worked, it was just an overlong Saturday Night Live Skit. Anytime Kevin Smith focuses on any relationship-friendship, romance, employer and employee, coworkers who turn into friends-it is great and real, and anything that he uses to jazz it up and go for the cheap, juvenile laugh just distracts from it and makes the movie unfocused. Based on his post-production comments, it sounds like Zack and Miri Make a Porno was autobiographical, but Smith didn’t have faith that his story was interesting enough and adulterated it. Speaking as one of countless people who have happily listened to him talk for hours about anything, dear Kevin Smith, stop doing that! If moans and tits are relevant and actually happened in your story, throw it in, but if it isn’t you, we don’t care. We love you just the way you are
