I would not necessarily recommend this movie because the narrative is hard to follow & scattered at different times. XXY is unexpectedly heart breaking & reflects real life by being hard to read certain situations as good, bad, neither or both. Also side characters unexpectedly end up hijacking the story in one moment–last casual thing said by father to son before exiting the car (GASP). At the end, I just found myself wondering, “Do we really have to look at people as a problem to be solved? Can’t we just let a person take the lead & tell us what they want instead of us trying to impose our vision of the world on their body?” Sometimes people make life harder than it needs to be.
