Where to Watch

I love vampire movies, especially the old school vamps, so I loved The Vampire Lovers. The production is so lush though not in terms of today’s production values and is a Hammer Film Production so that means hypersexual paired with wide-eyed innocence. The combination makes the whole thing a campy seduction. For those who may object to the heavy lesbian content, it is actually faithful to the short story that it was based on, Carmilla, which was published in 1872 and inspired such famous vampire cultural works as Dracula! What is truly clever is how it faithfully shows how in those days sexuality was acceptable only because in the feminine sphere so hidden from male awareness (heterosexual sexuality was condoned in certain socially acceptable spheres otherwise carried a stigma), but once discovered, seen as a threat and stamped out.
