Valkyrie

Drama, History, Thriller

Director: Bryan Singer

Release Date: December 25, 2008

Where to Watch

Why does Valkyrie have every British actor and less than a handful of German actors in a movie about a historical German event? Kenneth Branagh, Bill Nighy, Tom Wilkinson, Terence Stamp, Eddie Izzard, Tom Hollander. It is so inherently ridiculous that at that point, making Tom Cruise a part of the whole thing does not seem as absurd. Why not cast Bruce Willis too? Initially Bryan Singer seems like a perfect choice-you can’t ask for more emotional resonance of a fictional historical event than Magneto’s birth in the beginning of X-Men. Unfortunately Valkyrie is all about speeches and very little emotion or explanation as to why these particular Germans saw the light as opposed to the masses that supported Hitler. Instead it is reduced to the elements of any thriller: will the plot unfold as planned? Spoiler alert: it doesn’t. Valkyrie is an adequate movie-everyone does a good job, but it is a dance by numbers without any movement from the heart. Ultimately Valkyrie is forgettable, and I think that this is my second viewing.
