While I may not be putting all of Tyler Perry movies in my queue, I do enjoy black people reacting to supernatural events and am still a completist so when I saw that there was a sequel to Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, I knew that regardless of quality, I was in.
Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween is funnier than its predecessor. The daughter is 18 and gets permission from her mother to go to a frat party at a murder site, but Madea and her friends take it upon themselves to intervene. The moral of this story seems to be that the wife sucks, the daughter should not be like her, and the father deserves respect for ruining everyone’s night. Does Tyler Perry have issues with women and masculinity?
Unlike the first film, in Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween, we’re not sure if everyone is actually in danger or not, which is what I mistakenly thought was the first movie’s premise, and I prefer this take although I think there are enormous holes in the story. There was actually some character development. Leah, one of the daughter’s friends, actually matures and enjoys hanging out with Madea and her friends instead of acting like an aggrieved teenager. The frat boys have matured, and while they are still horn dogs, they are actually fairly decent in respecting boundaries and attempting to protect partygoers. I hate Tiffany. She killed a kitten. The grandfather is definitely an awful human being, a sex trafficker and a pedophile so I don’t think that it is funny, but I will admit that I laughed when he saved Leah. The production value improved.
Tyler Perry’s Boo 2! A Madea Halloween is a better movie than the initial installment, and if this particular branch of Perry’s franchise follows the same pattern, he may have found another reliable home viewer.
