The Two Cubas

Documentary

Director: Carolina Valencia

Release Date: January 1, 2006

Where to Watch

For such a short documentary, The Two Cubas drags a bit. What IS illuminating is what the documentary incidentally shows instead of what it focuses on: a friendship in peril because one of friends may leave forever. If you are trying to get hurricane coverage on tv, you may get Fidel talking for two hours. Don’t walk down the street & appear gay because you may be hauled off to jail. If men act effeminate or wear women’s clothes, it is illegal, but even those victimized by the law rationalize that it is to decrease crime. It was illegally filmed so whenever an official may see production, all involved would warn the cameraman & turn the camera off. Also no traveling! And if you travel, you’ll probably defect & never see your family or friends again.
