I’m not sure why films with epic ambitions work when done by old Hollywood, but not now though there are so many resources available to filmmakers now. There is one scene in the last 45 minutes of Troy between Peter O’Toole (LOVE) & Brad Pitt (didn’t hate him in this one because he wore a helmet) which illustrate the problem. O’Toole is begging for his son’s body–there is genuine emotion in his self-abasement at the hands of his son’s murderer. Pitt is ACTING as much as he can, but he is acting. It is on the surface & frankly Pitt is overwhelmed by the awesomeness of old school power. For all the pomp & circumstance, A for effort, but it just falls short. It needs authentic emotion & power. O’Toole says more with the word “Respect” than Pitt does in the entire movie. Don’t get me started on the gender issues!
