Where to Watch

Today’s Special is not original, but it was well-written and has many great elements: opening food preparation sequence, immigrant family generational gap issues, particularly when second generation has a job that isn’t a doctor or lawyer. It does not quite work because of casting and lack of acting ability by Aasif Mandvi, who hits the one note grumpy, put upon son so hard that his change throughout the movie is not gradual, but as if he is another person. There are few to zero likable characteristics of the main character at the start of the movie so when those characteristics suddenly appear as the movie continues, including the romantic relationship, it feels a bit formulaic despite the great emotional payoff from the middle to the end of the film. Doesn’t quite work, but still enjoyable.
