Where to Watch

Toast is the rare tv movie biopic that feels fair to each character (showing them at their worst and their best) while still rooting for the hero. It also does a great job of showing what it is like to discover who you are and overcoming obstacles without losing its sense of humor or becoming too earnest/cliche. It was so nice to have Helena Bonham Carter in a role in a project not involving Tim Burton. I loved that Toast presented a threshold of adulthood that we only see the main character approach-a place of compromise and pride in surviving, doing things well or living as well as possible. Even though the main character is a child for the majority of Toast, there is nothing cute about this film. If you love food and remember a time when the only cheese selection was Kraft singles then later discovered there was more out there, Toast is for you. I liked the movie so much that I plan to read the memoir as soon as possible. After seeing Bates Motel, it was a little weird when Freddie Highmore took over as the main character and added an unintended current of tension that probably wasn’t there. A great cast! Without seeing the real life central character before, I recognized him immediately when he made a cameo.
