Where to Watch

I grade on a curve, and since I wasn’t expecting a masterpiece, I actually enjoyed The Pyramid. I think that I decided to watch The Pyramid because I was under the false impression that it was a found footage film, but it is not. The Pyramid uses found footage elements, but many of the shots were not taken from a character’s camera.
The Pyramid felt like a classic horror film. I preferred it to As Above, So Below because the underlying mythology made sense throughout The Pyramid instead of dropping mystical elements randomly as atmosphere. Of course, the basic plot is predictable though there are a handful of innovative moments at the beginning that seem important, but aren’t as crucial as others (the 2013 Egyptian revolution). You won’t be surprised by who dies first, but you will be surprised how they die.
Imagine Indiana Jones if he was played by Denis O’Hare, True Blood’s Russell Edgington, was more realistically human, and if he had a daughter, Nora, who didn’t listen to a damn word that came out of his mouth. Everyone disregards his experience and expertise, and he basically keeps acting against his better judgment thus The Pyramid exists. Seriously if they listened to him, The Pyramid would have been less than a half hour. Unlike As Above, So Below, the reckless main character usually played by a man, but is a woman was more annoying in The Pyramid. She kept sighing expressly, “Dad!” as if he was a batty mess up when she clearly was the clueless one. She gets it together at one crucial moment, but not for long.

SPOILERS

I’m glad that the cats ended up playing a heroic role! I actually thought that Sunni, the tv personality, was going to end up being infected by her scratch and become a zombie so I was pleasantly surprised that she didn’t. I actually found Fitzie equal parts humorous and heroic. I loved the classic gags: an impalement room, sand traps, a labyrinth. I did think that Nora was going to emerge from The Pyramid just to get lynched by ersatz revolutionaries unaware of what lurked in The Pyramid. I think that my end is slightly better.
