If you need to empathize with a fictional white character to feel sympathetic to the plight of Uganda under the tyrannical reign of Idi Amin, then The Last King of Scotland is the movie for you. The Last King of Scotland has a brilliant and captivating cast, but the story feels like an obvious metaphor for European involvement in foreign politics. When there are plenty of real life figures who were charmed then disgusted by Amin such as Henry Kyemba who actually wrote about his experience as Minister of Health, The Last King of Scotland seems like a diluted and misguided effort to dramatize an already sensational story. If you are a fan of the actors in The Last King of Scotland, then definitely see it, otherwise skip it.
