Where to Watch

What happens if you take EVERY trope and plot device then put them in one movie? You would get The Intruders. The Intruders is rich in atmosphere, but suffers from Looper’s tragic flaws: the most interesting actor, Donal Logue, takes a back seat, and too many tropes makes it overstuffed. Is there a ghost? Is Tom Sizemore evil? Is the twenty-year old woman crazy and experiencing a psychotic break because of her tragic family medical history? Is her love interest real, a figment of her imagination or a suspect? Or is it a repressed religious nut job Norman Bates wannabe lurking in the secret compartments of the home? There was a point when I realized that I missed some crucial exposition and considered rewinding then thought, “Nah, it isn’t that serious.” I’m a completist so that move is pretty damning. I think that The Intruders lost me when her next-door neighbor basically derides her openly in the street then becomes her best friend in the next scene. Also I don’t care how crazy someone is, unless that crazy person is named Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees, stabbing that person with a piece of glass should slow them down more. If it was a better movie, I would blather on about gender and testimony credibility, but then I would be giving The Intruders more credit than it deserved. If you literally have nothing else to do and are not sleepy, The Intruders won’t make you question your life choices, but you will wonder about the plausibility of attending pool parties in the winter.
