Where to Watch

I hope that if I am ever fortunate enough to work hard for decades, be talented and beautiful, finally get an opportunity to write and my husband direct a movie starring some of the best actors in the world, that I don’t screw it up by making complete dreck like Tammy. I have loved Melissa McCarthy since Gilmore Girls and was delighted by her finally getting the spotlight in Bridesmaids, but McCarthy and her husband have sold themselves short. They simultaneously want Tammy to be this working class, unemployable, anti-Obama, emotionally-stunted stereotype, but she seems to have bottomless resources as she destroys multiple vehicles and goes through thousands of dollars without wincing. I don’t need my humor to be realistic, just consistent and actually funny, which Tammy is not. Tammy felt reminiscent of Adam Sandler’s recent flicks that are a tax-deductible excuse to get paid while hanging out with his friends. Tammy’s cast is amazing: Susan Sarandon, Allison Janney, Kathy Bates, Gary Cole, Toni Collette, Dan Aykroyd, Mark Duplass, Sandra Oh. McCarthy must have said that she wanted to do a road trip movie with Thelma and Louise, but Geena Davis wasn’t available then it felt like an abrupt afterthought when Tammy tries to deal with issues of alcohol abuse and shoehorn a romance that felt about as organic and natural as Monsanto. Tammy is a complete waste of time, effort and talent. Skip it even if you love everyone in Tammy-especially if you love everyone in it.
