My Super Ex-Girlfriend has an excellent and likable cast, particular Eddie Izzard, whom I love love love. He does not fail us here, but ultimately the material is not funny. Worse, it has kind of messed up values that it plays for laughs. The superhero isn’t just a psycho girlfriend. Even when things are going well, she is kind of rapey. When things go bad, she hurts animals, destroys property andbatters her boyfriend. She isn’t psycho. She is a criminal. Unintentionally a metaphor for men trapped in physically abusive relationships with women? No, it is played for laughs. I can confirm this because when the psycho gender behavior is reversed, the perfect guy is a stalker of epic proportions who has been repeatedly trying to hurt the woman of his dreams because he loves her. Whoever wrote My Super Ex-Girlfriend makes Shonda Rhimes’ depictions of romance seem reasonable and healthy. There are some clever turns on the superhero genre-female superheroes have more than one iconic outfit, but overall not worth a viewing except for diehard fans of the cast.
