Where to Watch

I think that the casting was perfect for Submarine. Otherwise, I wished that I was watching a Wes Anderson film or any other film that attempts to use quirky, stylized narrative techniques and framing to convey teen angst as the male teen struggles against the rumbling approach of adulthood. Paddy Considine stole the entire movie as a leather-clad New-age motivational speaker who has a history with the teen’s mother and is the next door neighbor. Submarine unintentionally made me think that this kid was a junior version of Malcolm McDowell in A Clockwork Orange except less likable so I wasn’t sympathetic to the main character. I guess that I don’t automatically love every cultural product that comes out of the UK. Most people really enjoyed Submarine so ask them why you should see it because I can’t think of a single reason to watch an unremarkable, alternatively narcissistic to depressed teenager flail about like a fish as he tries to determine which path to take in life.
