More soul than Universal Soldier, which I only vaguely remember, but Soldier suffers from a filmmaker who primarily sees it as an action movie and not as a part of the Blade Runner world as intended by the writer. Soldier has very interesting themes: the idea of disposable people in a military/corporate society for those who aren’t replicants, the idea of gender role imprisoning men and in order to transcend and achieve humanity, one must give in to emotion and unfortunately a possible anxiety over certain racial groups overtaking American men in competition. The actors see more in this script than the director and execute very subtle, but stunning performances, but this film has dated visual effects and may not be worth your time unless you’re really into Blade Runner.
