While Tarkovsky sees Solaris as Narcissus’ tragedy, Soderbergh sees Solaris (2002) the mirror/simulacrum as a solution. Americans prefer the masturbatory ideal over the real. Solaris is a beautiful movie in its own right, but not enough contrast between Earth & space because Solaris is ultimately Earth’s ambition: love with no mess. Clooney does not have enough emotive qualities to carry the film, but rest of the cast is brilliant.
