To Sir, With Love is dated & not in a nostalgic way like Blackboard Jungle. Even though it is based on a true story–probably tamed for consumption, it feels more like an excuse to exploit Beatlemania’s instigation of fascination with British teen culture & Sidney Poitier love. The film even has a pop singer as one of the students. Also the gender dynamic is uncomfortable in an extreme way. Even the filming technique is awkward: series of still photographs to signify the kids’ first field trip. The kids were unruly & undisciplined, but unlike most inspirational teacher movies, including Blackboard Jungle where the kids were rapists, thieves & gang members, not that bad.
