Within first two minutes, I immediately thought of An American Haunting. You may ask why I don’t have a problem with Fight Club, Shutter Island & The Machinist, but with An American Haunting & Silent House (in TV, US version of Being Human) when all the films deal with split personalities & repressed memories. When the male is the protagonist, he is not the victim in either scenario, and when he finally reclaims his repressed memories, it culminates in a moment of redemption, active agency and resolution whereas when the female is the protagonist, she is a victim in her repressed memories and in the foreground narrative terrorized by her alternate self, and when she finally reclaims her repressed memories, it culminates in a moment of revenge and a sense that the story will never be finished. Even in her most powerful moment, she is not given full agency or credit for her actions.
