Where to Watch

Red Tails is not the black movie that I was looking for. So glad that I trusted my instincts & didn’t see it in theaters. Red Tails feels more like a movie from the 80s or even earlier. Each character gets a resume to show that he is super respectable (my parent is a judge; I have a PhD; I cured cancer) and assigned foible (young, reckless, alcoholic), but the audience doesn’t get to know them. We do get to see them check off events on the list of action war movie tropes. Red Tails cares more about action so if you’re there for elaborate aerial combat or inspirational speeches by Terence Howard while Cuba Gooding glowers in the background, this one is for you. Red Tails wanted to show three types of battles: bureaucratic, daily & aerial, but ambition fell short in execution. Lucas’ weakness is his inability to depict on the screen or elicit from the audience believable adult emotion. Red Tails should have been a Sunday night tv movie.
