Where to Watch

I really like zombie movies and Jeffrey Combs from The 4400 and his various appearances throughout the Star Trek television universe so I thought that I would love Re-Animator, but it was too dated and intentionally over the top for me to enjoy. It is clearly inspired by Dr. Frankenstein and owes a debt to Evil Dead, but unlike Shelley’s famous doctor, Dr. West never seems to learn from his past mistakes. He is so intent on conquering death that he never seems to realize that he may have defeated death, but what he got in exchange is nothing close to life. The inmates seem to be running the asylum, and the only people with a smidge of sense are a hysterical woman (understandably so considering the events of Re-Animator) and the black security guards. I think that Re-Animator is saying something about the inherent sickness of power dynamics in American society-in men’s eagerness to dominate, it does not matter if you have changed the beautiful into something monstrous and become something monstrous yourself, only domination, achievement and control matters. Unintentionally Re-Animator’s final scenes reminded me of the naked man on the BART doing gymnastics and fighting people, but he wasn’t a reanimated dead person, just a dude who was either mentally ill &/or high on drugs. Not a must see unless you love cult classics and are willing to sign a waiver for dated special effects.
