A documentary called The Prep School Negro cannot exist without me eventually finding out about it and then watching it since I am one. Andre Robert Lee, the director, set out to make a documentary about black students attending a Philadelphia prep school and the effects-intended (broader horizons) and unintended (socio-economic disparities), but instead it becomes more personal, and he abandons his broader purpose. Instead Lee announces his shift to a documentary about his family, his place within it and his perceptions versus the reality. I don’t want to give away too much of the plot, but his discoveries are simultaneously painful, hopeful and delightful. I loved it.
