Where to Watch

I didn’t like the visual style of this movie. Phil Spector was physically hard to watch because of the lighting which was unflattering to the luminous Helen Mirren. Mamet’s eye has a freak filter that degrades everything-which is fine until it extends to my viewing experience. I love Al Pacino, but he basically did the same performance that he has done in everything lately–he just wore different costumes, makeup & wigs. I happen to enjoy him, but if you’re not a fan, you’ve been warned. Overall, a great cast, but I felt like they were somewhat restrained by the direction that they received-for instance, Mirren playing a sick lawyer was a bit of a belabored metaphor. Jess Wood did a phenomenal job-she did a lot with what time she was given. Her face and physical expression showed so much nuance for a person that was unnamed in the credits. Imagine what she could do with more screen time!
