How is it possible that an independent movie based on a true story involving gay men willingly showed copious drug use & violence, but didn’t have one openly gay actor? A straight person can play a gay person & they did a good job, but at least one gay actor could have acted as an extra or something. Documentary was better because unflinchingly looked at the downside of club culture. Even had Michael Alig dating a woman at some point! I know that it is a law that Chloe Sevigny has to be featured in every independent film, but she didn’t have to be his girlfriend! I do think that Party Monster succeeded in making a distinction between St. James & Alig as a good & evil dynamic. Both may want to be “profoundly shallow,” but when confronted with hurting people, intentionally or not, can you snap out of the party & engage in the real world. Are people accessories or people?
