Orca: The Killer Whale

Where to Watch

When I was a kid, I used to watch Orca: The Killer Whale every time it came on WPIX (NYC shout out), and it not only still holds up, but I appreciate it more now: the swipe at Jaws, the amazing cast, the 70s style, the radical idea of sympathizing with the animal as a character from the opening scenes, the amazing, timeless, barren landscape in the penultimate scene and the tragic, but poetic implications of the closing credits. And thanks to Delia, I focused on the score more. Sure there are ridiculous moments–seriously if a whale had done that much damage to a town, why would anyone else voluntarily get on that ship if they didn’t have to, but instead it is about how to survive tragedy or not.
