I know that Nine is supposed to be loosely based on 8 1/2, but the line between homage and plagiarism even with the alleged feminist have-your-cake-and-eat-it-too theme is gossamer thin. A narcissistic director who treats the women in his life like fantasy objects wakes up and realizes that they are people–who happen to still gyrate in lacey outfits as they begin to express their outrage. Also if you have a song called, “Be Italian,” it would help if there were more than one Italian in the cast. I would be interested in how Italians received the film. Marion Cotillard was the only one who truly nailed both the emotion of her character and her musical performances. Skip it and watch Chicago.
