Night of Dark Shadows

Drama, Horror, Mystery

Director: Dan Curtis

Release Date: August 4, 1971

Where to Watch

Night of Dark Shadows is about a pair of newlyweds who move to the husband’s freshly inherited estate, but his behavior changes dramatically for a vaguely supernatural reason, and the sinister housekeeper is clearly up to shenanigans. Their friends, another married couple who are successful horror novelists, try to stop the momentum of whatever is beginning to take hold of the husband.
Even if you are a fan of Dark Shadows, do not see Night of Dark Shadows, the second feature film, which really has nothing to do with the TV show except that it features some of the same actors and uses the same names of characters in the show. If you are a fan of horror movies, do not see Night of Dark Shadows. Dark Shadows told so many great stories, but instead of following the formula of House of Dark Shadows by taking a single storyline and expanding on it, it took a storyline from the least successful part of the series, parallel time, and completely revising it and combining it with other parts of the parallel time storyline until it comes out an unintelligible mess. Night of Dark Shadows criminally does not realize what made Angelique great and reduces Lara Parker to a Hammer production busty chick.
Apparently Curtis was forced to cut 35 minutes of Night of Dark Shadows so Night of Dark Shadows is probably a victim of studio whims rather than creative suicide for a quick buck, but either way, Night of Dark Shadows is better forgotten and untouched than viewed for the sake of nostalgia. Skip it.
