Basically any documentary such as Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown will be a success if it features footage from James Brown’s performances, which it does, but what distinguishes it from other documentaries on James Brown are interviews with his musicians and how those musicians created the James Brown sound. Mr. Dynamite: The Rise of James Brown also focuses on James Brown’s autobiographical narrative of the keys to success and how the narrative of a supernaturally gifted person applied to the general population is not only problematic, but ignores other crucial objective obstacles that may hinder even a talented person from achieving the same success as James Brown. Ironically Brown’s efforts to push that narrative politically diminished his financial success. He exposed his hypocrisy when he denied others success by denying them their salaries.
