Where to Watch

Strong visuals, good story, great cast. I know a lot of people complained about getting the back story on where Superman came from, but I wanted a prequel devoted to Russell Crowe, who still has it, & Ayelet Zurer, an Israeli actress. The brief exploration of Krypton as a society was fascinating & visually arresting. I enjoyed the narrative structure (nonlinear flashbacks) and how Clark was introduced, especially the story hitting the theme of what makes someone an American and the idea of immigration although I would not mind seeing Clark being a bit more enraged at least inwardly (like when he was clutching the fence) when treated like the enemy and dangerous when he has lived in Kansas most of his life. I am a big Jesus fan, but the one scene hit it too hard, was clunky and eye roll worthy with the number of crosses and Euro Jesus in every shot. I also appreciated how Snyder embraced the alien imagery which dominated Man of Steel. Most of the scenes before all the action sequences began were quite beautiful and felt like allusions to other masterpieces such as Wim Wenders’ Wings of Desire. With that said, there were a lot of action sequences, they were relevant & well done, but for me, less is more. I’m getting too old to enjoy the massive destruction of property (people, stop watching and run) and would not have minded the sequences cut a bit short. Visually it began to descend into video game status. Your CGI is showing as Michael Shannon & Henry Cavill’s faces are taped into each sequence. A strong film and worth a trip to the big screen.
