Where to Watch

This Belgian film makes a lot of assumptions about the audience’s historical knowledge of Lumumba & Congo’s struggle for independence so if you decide to watch it, be prepared to be confused by the nonlinear narrative. It follows many of the standard tropes familiar to American audiences regarding fallen leaders: persecution, acceptance, assassination, but the twist is that the film has a strong implied undercurrent that though he was seemingly accepted, there were always outside forces just pretending to give the Congo independence and him power while actually undermining that independence through treatment of military by Belgian officers and foreign forces fomenting corruption & dissent. Second movie this weekend that I watched that casts US as one of the villains in the shadows. Incredibly sad, lengthy & sketchy death. At least assassinations in the US are quick, and the family has a body to bury. A good film, but you’ll walk away with more questions since not made for American consumption.
